Whale Watching in San Diego 2014.  How to choose a Whale Watching company.

We've had a great start to whale watching season this year with plenting of sightings, and lots of big schools of common dolphin to sail with.

This was one of those amazing days with a huge school of common and pacific white side dolphins playing with the boat.  The view from the bow nets was breathtaking!

There are many ways to go whale watching in San Diego so the question is: How do you choose a company to go whale watching with?

How many people do you want to be on the boat with you? Most companies taking guests whale watching take up to 100 people or more on the boat.  Fun Cat Sailing Adventures takes around 6 guests so you will never feel like a tourist crowded at the rail fighting to see a whale tale in the distance.

What type of boat do you want to go on?  We use a large stable sailing catamaran that doesn't roll around in the ocean swells like "single hulled" boats.  Since our boat is very wide, it makes for a very spacious and comfortable viewing platform to see the whales and dolphins from.

Does the boat you choose to go whale watching on have weather protection? Our catamaran has a large windshield to block the cool winter breezes, and a roof for sun protection.  In the summer when the weather is warm, this is not as important, but whale watching in the winter can get cold.

Is there a bathroom available?  A good whale watching trip should last 3 1/2 hours or more because it takes time to get out to see the whales.  Our catamaran has a large bathroom, and cabin.

Can the boat sail quietly with the whales?  Grey whales have excellent hearing and are frightened by large noisy boats.  Our catamaran has the ability to sail quietly with the whales which allows for closer sightings and a much more natural approach.

Does the boat have a comfortable, and exciting place to watch the whales from?  Our bow nets forward on our catamaran are perfect for watching dolphins swim between the bows, and you can lounge in the sun during your whale watching tour.  You can also sit in the protected area of the boat on a cushion with a comfortable backrest, or venture onto the bows for a more adventurous ride.

Who is taking you whale watching?  Well......I am!  My name is Capt. Rod Jones and I've been taking guests sailing and whale watching since 1988.  This is my passion, and what I love to do.  You will feel comfortable aboard my boat, and it will be just like you are out sailing with friends.  Give me a call and we can schedule, or talk more about your adventure.

Come out whale watching this season with Fun Cat Sailing Adventures.

Look forward to sailing with you!

July summer sailing and kayaking magic in San Diego......

Just as we started our sailing adventure on Monday morning, and before I even raised the mainsail, we found our 1st dolphins for the day......Monday magic.  We launched the kayaks right off the catamaran and the fun began.

Just a little sunset cruise relaxation on the bow net.
Sunday heat wave.  The water was feeling pretty nice.
That's the "I'm going to splash my sister" look.....
Ruffus the sea lion sound a sleep on this hot day.
Captain standing in the back of the kayaking issuing orders.....

Our new Captain at the helm.
The shade under the hard top on my catamaran was real nice this week during the heat wave.

Come out for a sail in San Diego with us this summer.

Look forward to sailing with you,
Capt. Rod

June Fun Sailing In San Diego

June has been a fun month with some sunny days, and well.....a few cloudy days as well.  Our friendly dolphins have been visiting us regularly, and giving us a few good shows on our sailing trips.  We've even had a some adventurous guests put on all the sailing gear and go out kayaking on one of the coldest evenings of the month.   Lots of goofing off as usual.  Come out and go for a sail with me on one of my sailing tours this summer.

Summer Party Fun

This is my favorite time of the year.  The water is warming up, the kids are starting to get out of school, and we start having lots and lots of great parties on the boat.  Birthday parties, anniversary parties, bachelorette parties, sweet 16 parties, and all sorts of other types of celebrations.  Some parties are more formal, and my catamaran is decorated beautifully, and other parties are more like a beach jam with kayaking, swimming, and alot of goofing off.  Sailing in San Diego is at it's best as we go into the summer.  Look forward to sailing with you this summer.
